Tea for the sea: TC resident serving the world
BY KEVIN BOWEN
For Janine Davis, an herbal tea aimed for travelers of the deep blue sea has her diving into success.
From her home in The Colony, Davis runs her own business that sells her tea to divers and others in parts of Europe and Asia.
Her product, Diversitea, is a drink that she says helps divers to relieve themselves of the effects of breathing in compressed nitrogen as they dive. These effects include the sense of disorientation known as "The Bends" as well as other even more serious reactions.
"It's a worldwide product," she said. "A lot of the dive shops in the U.S. carry it."
Davis said she has been interested in herbal teas and herbal medicines even before she started out as a diver. She was researching an herbal ingredient known as "red clover" and discovered, she said, that it had properties that helped in breaking down nitrogen in the human body.
As divers take in compressed oxygen, they also take in compressed nitrogen, she said, leading to that assortment of problems. She started to wonder if the ingredient would help divers.
"I dove for a couple of years with red clover to see if I felt better, and I did," she said.
She markets the product at diving events, and at www.diversitea.com.
