Lions gearing up for balloon fest

Published: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:32 PM CDT
The Colony Lions Club has teamed up with other Lions from around the area to help organize and host the annual Highland Village Balloon Festival, scheduled for Aug. 15-17 at Copperas Branch Park.

Clubs from The Colony, Lewisville, Highland Village, Denton, and the Lake Cities have been meeting in preparation for next month’s festival. In addition to three days of hot air balloons, attendees can expect an arts and crafts bazaar, food and drinks, live musical entertainment, and a variety of other activities.

The festival is set to kick off at 5 p.m. Aug. 15 with the opening of the crafts bazaar and activity booths. At dusk, balloons will ignite and inflate for a balloon glow on the ground.

A balloon lift-off is scheduled for approximately 7 a.m. Aug. 16. The balloons will launch, land, and come back in about an hour. Musical entertainment and other activities will be ongoing throughout the day.

A second launch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. that night in which one balloon as the “hare” will take off first, to be “chased” by the rest of the balloons in a competition to see which balloon can reach the lead balloon first.

On the morning of Aug. 17, balloons will take part in another competition before a breakfast and awards ceremony. The festival will be concluded by noon.

Attendance to the festival is free but a per-car donation of $5 is requested for parking.

This event is the local club’s primary fund-raiser for the year, said Dave Gramm of The Colony Lions Club. The club uses the funds to pay for its community service projects, such as purchasing eyeglasses for students in need as well as holiday food baskets on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The event was flooded out last year following severe weather so organizers are hoping for high turnout this year. The balloon festival has been an annual event for almost 20 years, said Gramm, adding that all the clubs involved in the project are closely knit and looking forward to next month’s festival.
