Texas Voices concert scheduled for March 1
By Kim Nguyen, Staff Writer
Stressed and overworked? A Plano-based choral group, The Texas Voices, will be performing a concert that will calm the jitters of even the most high-strung businessperson.
The Texas Voices’ concert, “This Sacred Place,” will take place March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Royal Lane Baptist Church, 6707 Royal Lane in Dallas.
The Texas Voices will perform all classical music at their Sunday concert. The pieces were selected to evoke a sanctuary, a majestic landscape or a quiet walk in solitude. The program includes composer-in-residence Debra Scroggins’ “Out of the Depths;” Salvadoran composer Carlos Colón’s “Las Lamentaciones de Rufina Amaya;” Antonio Lotti?s “Crucifixus;” Guy Forbes’ “O Nata Lux;” Eric Whitacre’s “When David Heard;” and Daniel Gawthrop’s “First Light.”
A number of guest artists are scheduled to make an appearance at the concert. James Emery, piano; Shelbie Simmons, organ; Debra Scroggins, mezzo-soprano; string ensemble from Baylor University; and children’s choir from Miller Elementary School, Richardson ISD.
“Ticket sales have been pretty good and reflect a fair amount of anticipation for the concert,” said Sandy Conrad, president of the board of directors. “We do typically generate most of our ticket sales at the door, so it is hard to say.”
Dyer and Conrad said that this year’s concert season has “gone wonderfully,” with several concerts selling out.
The Texas Voices is also offering a special ticket promotion for the 2008-2009 concert season. For every two tickets purchased to one concertgoer, a third free ticket will be given. The offer is only available through advance purchase and not valid at the door.
“We are really trying to encourage people to purchase their tickets in advance,” Conrad said. “That way, they are guaranteed a ticket and they have the opportunity to get a free third ticket.”

In celebration of their fifth anniversary, The Texas Voices released their first full-length CD last fall. “Voices Live” contains tracks representing the most popular choral arrangements from performances in the first five seasons.
Founded by Artistic Director Alan Dyer, The Texas Voices is a Plano-based professional vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to promoting excellence in the choral arts. The chorus is a non-profit organization. The ensemble gave its debut performance in May 2003 and has gained recognition for its polished, nuanced sound, exceptional repertoire and premiere works. In 2005, the chorus welcomed Debra Scroggins as its Composer-in-Residence. In December 2007, the chorus was the featured artist on WRR 101.1 FM’s hour-long radio program, “Music of the Metroplex.”
