"We have been working very hard to makes this year's event a lot of fun for everyone involved,” said David Swain, recreation manager with The Colony Parks and Recreation Department. “We have several new items in the Family Fun Zone that we think are going to be very popular. There will be a great selection of food vendors to choose from this year as well. Our headline band, ‘Time Machine,’ has a great sound and will be a lot of fun.”
The day’s events begin at 6:30 a.m. with registration for the 24th annual Liberty 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. The 1-Mile race begins at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K race begins at 8:05 a.m. The event is held at Stewart Creek Park, 3700 Sparks Road. As many as 700 runners are expected to register. Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
Lineup for the parade begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Little League baseball fields on North Colony Boulevard. The parade then proceeds west to Blair Oaks Drive, south to South Colony Boulevard, then west to the Big Lots parking lot on Main Street.
The day’s primary event, Liberty by the Lake, kicks off at 4 p.m. at Stewart Creek Park. A variety of activities will be available in the Family Fun Zone. Live musical entertainment for will be provided by “The Silvertones,” followed by “Time Machine.” The Anything That Floats Regatta begins at 5 p.m. The Salsa Shootout begins at 7 p.m.
Liberty by the Lake will reach its climax with a Fireworks Extravaganza scheduled to light the sky over Lewisville Lake at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks are choreographed to patriotic music which will be broadcast at the park and on radio at 99.9FM.
Free shuttle parking will be available from several locations near the park. For details on parking, logon to www.libertybythelake.com.
“We'd like to see people arrive at the park as early as possible this year so that by the time it starts to get dark and the fireworks show is about to start no one is stuck in their car still trying to get to the park,” said Jackie Lopez, parking and traffic coordinator. “I'd recommend that you plan to arrive no later than 6 p.m. in order to ensure a quick and simple parking experience.”
