Former councilwoman announces candidacy for District 66 seat in State Legislature

Former Plano City Councilwoman Mabrie Jackson announced Thursday her intention to run for the District 66 seat in the State Legislature.
After serving 18 months on the council, Jackson resigned her council seat on Monday. Her sudden resignation came shortly after State Rep. Brian McCall, a 20-year veteran of the state house, announced he would not be seeking re-election at the end of his current term.
McCall has kept mum about his plans after his term ends in 2011, but political pundits have speculated that his decision is one of many smaller changes in the big picture for Texas lawmakers.
Jackson won the Place 3 seat on the city council in 2008 after a close race against incumbent Loretta Ellerbe. Since being sworn in, Jackson believes she has upheld her campaign pledge to be an active voice in the council, bringing fresh ideas throughout the budget session in an effort to find additional deductions, and being a community voice to the council. She cast one of the three votes against the property tax increase in September.
“There are a lot of things that affect our city and school that happen in Austin,” she said. “I can help Plano by representing Plano in the Texas legislature. I want to make sure that there are people there that represent us at all levels.”
Jackson’s resignation from the Plano City Council went into effect Monday, and she plans to file campaign paperwork at the beginning of December. How quickly everything fell into place surprised even her.
“The last time the District 66 seat was open was 20 years ago when Brian McCall took the seat,” she said. “This was always something I knew I wanted to do. I’ve known for many, many years that I want to serve Plano in Austin, and when I saw the opportunity come up, I wanted to take it.”
Calling State Representative Brian McCall a friend, Jackson complimented his past 20 years of serving Plano in the Texas legislature.
“Having grown up in Plano, I have a great appreciation for all Brian has done for Collin County and Plano. He was a key supporter of Gov. Bush and has been instrumental in reducing our state and local taxes,” Jackson stated. “Our community and local Republican party are proud of Brian for his public service.”
Jackson has also served as a Commissioner of the Collin County grand jury and is past president of Collin County Child Protective Services. While on the city council, Jackson served on the Regional Super Bowl Government Action Committee and National League of Cities Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee.
“I am running for this office because I believe in our children, our community and our conservative values,” she said. “I am a grassroots Republican who is dedicated to lower taxes, conservative pro-life family values, quality public schools and strong public safety. I also strongly favor illegal immigration reform, property owner rights and gun owner rights.”
An active Plano Republican, Jackson belongs to the Texas Federation of Republican Women, serves as scholarship chairman of the Conner Harrington Republican Women and is a former delegate to the Republican State Convention.
Jackson has also been a recent recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Community Involvement Award and named in 2006 by “Inside Collin County Business” as one of the area’s 21 Leaders for The 21st Century. Additionally, Jackson has received the city of Plano’s Volunteer of the Month award.
Jackson, a second-generation Plano resident, has 23 years of account management and marketing experience with Microsoft and EDS. She and her husband, whom she met in second grade at Shepard Elementary School, are active in the PTA and in sports booster clubs for their two sons.
