Area police team up to catch suspect

The Colony Police Department recently assisted the Lewisville Police Department in executing an arrest warrant for a suspect wanted for aggravated robbery.
The Colony resident Jeffrey Berkley, 22, was arrested on Thursday for aggravated robbery. Lt. Darren Brockway with The Colony Police Department said officers went to Berkley’s home to execute the warrant, but he was not at the residence. However, the same day he was pulled over for a traffic violation, the officer ran his plates and discovered that there was an outstanding felony warrant.
“It’s pretty standard for officers to run people when they are pulled over,” Brockway said. “Plus, we were aware of the situation from Lewisville. The suspect went with the officer without incident.”
“I recognized him from the video,” Brockway said. “We work with bordering cities all the time, so this was not out of the norm.”
Berkley was arrested for an aggravated robbery that occurred at the Best Value Inn and Suites on Feb. 17 in Lewisville. According to police reports, at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the location. During the robbery, a 76-year-old clerk was hit in the head and knocked to the ground by the suspect. The suspect removed cash from the cash drawer and fled the location. Officers checked the area, but the suspect was not located.
Through interviews with motel staff, Detective Richard Anders with the Lewisville Police Department learned that an exterior window had been removed from the office area. He reviewed surveillance footage from that area and observed the suspect enter the office area and grab a flower vase. The video captured a clear image of the suspect. The suspect then returned a short time later with his face covered and committed the robbery. The police report states that a fingerprint was lifted off the flower vase, which led to a comparison match.
After he was arrested, Berkley was transported to the Lewisville City Jail. A $25,000 bond was set at his arraignment. Brockway said he faces no charges in The Colony.
