Weather slows pothole repair

Potholes are a problem year-round but keeping up with repairs has been even more challenging of late, says The Colony Utilities Director Tod Maurina.
Extreme winter weather the past few months has exacerbated the problem, especially in older, high-traffic areas. Moisture penetrates cracked pavement and pools under the surface of the street. The pools then freeze and expand, heaving the pavement, Maurina said.
Once a section of road is compromised, it becomes more susceptible to further damage until permanent repairs can be affected. Weather conditions also limit the city’s ability to make those repairs.
Communications Director Diane Baxter said the city was recently able to obtain needed materials by purchasing in greater quantity.
“(But) because of the large demand, the suppliers are taking care of those with the greatest need,” she said. “We were able to get another load in today and will continue to order needed materials weekly.”
Maurina said the city wants residents to be aware that they are working to repair potholes throughout the city.
“The city realizes words can be soothing, but deeds are what will make your commute more pleasant. We will make every effort to make repairs as quickly as possible and hope to address the major problem areas over the next few weeks,” Maurina said.
