With students returning to school Aug. 23, drivers will face strict enforcement of laws prohibiting cell phone use in school zones, according to The Colony Police Department.
Although the law was put in place Sept. 1, 2009, the city recently ordered signs reading, “cell phone use prohibited,” to be posted near all school campuses, to inform both students as well as parents.
TCPD Community Resource Officer Sgt. Jim Slack said that any cell phone use, whether it's texting, sending or receiving e-mails, or accepting calls can qualify as violations. Violators may be fined up to $200. The only exception is a hands-free device.
